My wife and I were in an auto accident two nights ago.

Shortly after my wife and I moved into our first house, I called an HVAC specialist. Our furnace wasn’t working. It would turn on, then shut right off. The HVAC specialist taught me that furnace filters need to be replaced every 3-6 months. My furnace filter was caked, so the furnace couldn’t push adequate air through.

I didn’t know furnaces had filters until ours broke down.

What if it’s the same with people? The filter that is our central nervous system starts out clean, but as we age life clogs it. We get more nervy, less efficient. Then we have breakdowns and we are confused. We think, “What the heck is happening?!,” unaware we possess a filter in need of maintenance.

Paul Wilson taught my dad and me Transcendental Meditation 87 days ago. It is a twice daily practice that cleans my nervous system's filter so the world is easier to live in. Practicing TM, I’m clearer-headed, happier, and more content with things as they are.

It turns out, not doing anything for 40 minutes a day makes a very big difference to my quality of life. Before Transcendental Meditation, I lost one of my best friends, Drake Oversen, to an avalanche. I fell into a deep depression and began to believe the next 30-40 years of my life would be filled with suffering, accompanied by brief moments of joy. After TM, that switched. I now believe the next 30-40 years of my life will be filled with joy, punctuated by moments of important, but painful suffering. The good news is, I now have a reliable meditation practice for navigating those tougher moments.

Over the past five years, my son has struggled tremendously in school and at home with paralyzing anxiety among other psychological traumas. He is also developmentally delayed, primarily lacking many of his basic executive functioning skills. I enrolled him in private school for second grade, which was the school year of the early pandemic. Homeschooling him was impossible, resulting in us both of us breaking down in tears on a daily basis. Toward the end of third grade I would still see, “fails to complete any any all assignments,” and he required an adult by his side at all times to redirect his attention. It was during that conference that I realized that my son needed serious professional help. His behavior and anxiety were out of control, resulting in his therapist looking into some inpatient emergency treatment for him. Eventually we found the right combination of medication for him, but his school required a full psychological evaluation in order to construct the best learning support plan for his specific needs. The doctor who performed the evaluation recommended TM in her final report, along with the diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome....

Once he learned TM from Paul, just a few weeks after school started, I noticed a change in his homework completion, work ethic, and attitude almost immediately. He started saying things like, “I want to make it a goal to get an A on everything.” Helping him with him homework became possible almost and almost effortless. I’ve found him doing his homework without being prompted. The most striking benefit came when I got his first report card. Prior to the conference with his advisor, I was a bit nervous to read his progress report. Those had always been so disheartening. I was brought to tears by what I saw. He had mostly A’s, two B’s and one C, which was in math and that’s where he receives the most learning support. One teacher raved that he shows up to class every day with a positive attitude and shows enthusiasm about mastering all of the material. I also get brag emails and texts from his teachers....

I can’t recommend TM enough. It’s truly a gift.

There seems to be invitations to meditate everywhere. At the grocery store on the magazine shelves there are shiny promises of zen and present moment bliss. I tried apps and magazines and books to try to reach the promise of stillness within. Like most people I found the idea intriguing, but I was scratching the surface without really breaking through to this oasis from stress.

One morning I was reading the IndyStar and in one of the advice columns a reader had written in that Transcendental Meditation(TM) had helped them with their sleeping issues. I must have read it after a particularly sleepless night, because I was googling it in the next breath. 

There was a training center not far from my house and a free introductory class. I signed up without hesitation. In the intro class you learn that TM is a form of meditation that is taught through mostly one on one instruction over the course of four days. It costs several hundred dollars depending on your income level. I had picked up some extra work earlier in the year and decided to put those earnings towards the class. 

Auspiciously, I started my first TM session on Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and I have practiced twice daily since then. Its a remarkably simple technique that requires 20 minutes in the morning and evening. TM doesn't ask you to stop thinking or empty your mind which is what people mostly associate with meditation. The TM intro course likens it to the mind being like the turbulent surface of the ocean, but once we allow it to settle down it can access the deep, still calm waters of the deep. I would say it is like holding a baby that is fighting against sleep. If you rock and pat the baby for long enough it settles into a blissful, peaceful sleep (you don't actually fall asleep in TM). 

Its funny because as I've experienced more clarity with my mind I am experiencing more clarity in my body as well. I'm eating better, I'm exercising more, I'm not perfect, but I can feel the ripples of my practice through different areas of my life including sleeping better!

Hi Paul! Have to share! One of my primary motivations for taking the TM class was to reduce blood pressure that had started climbing during breast cancer battle. It had been creepig up and had just moved from pre-hypertension to stage 1 hypertension so I was really starting to get worried. I told doctor I was going to take the TM class, and she set up a 6 week follow-up. 3 weeks ago I got the best news ever... Clear mammogram AND normal BP! Recently, I spent 3 months in California, in search of finding some inner peace. I left everything, and everyone I cared about, behind, hoping to "find myself". (Whatever that meant) I attended yoga classes, tried acupuncture, and took long walks on the beach, and although those are all lovely things, they did NOT bring me the inner peace I craved. I had no idea how I was going to find that. While I was away, my husband met with Paul, and learned the TM technique. It was something he had wanted to do for a long time, and he figured this was the perfect time to do so. When he joined me in California, I knew right away he was different. He was a much happier, calmer version of himself! He would meditate, while I drove home, and when his 20 minutes were up, he would just smile and yawn! I remember having a "When Harry Met Sally" moment, and thinking..."I'll have what HE'S having!!!" I wanted to learn, too. As a matter of fact, we contacted Paul while still on the road! He promptly emailed me back, and the rest is history. TM is easy. TM brings me the inner peace I crave, because I believe that I found myself. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin, and less anxious and nervous about things. TM has also brought my husband and I closer together. We meditate every morning, and every evening, TOGETHER. We are definitely more connected, more compassionate, and patient with each other, and can now calmly problem solve. I first became interested in TM way back in 1992, I did some research and was very intrigued by the concept and claims of the technique, but….life got in the way and I put it on the back burner, fast forward to 2009, I again began looking into TM, again….. I allowed life to get in my way.

I’ve been a healthy person for the majority of my adult life, healthy diet, active lifestyle…….. I’ve also been an alcoholic for the majority of my adult life, putting my family and my body through the wringer.

I quit drinking Feb. 10, 2019 and started the path to try and repair the damage I’d done to my family and my body.

I again started looking into TM. I found Paul and the TM center in Indianapolis. I attended the introductory talk and was totally IN!!! I started my training Thanksgiving weekend and have not looked back once!!

The technique is exactly what it is claimed to be. SIMPLE and EFFORTLESS!!!! I am, by nature an…… Intense? Personality. I’ve been called a bully more than once. Within the first week of practicing TM, I had fellow employees ask me,  “are you feeling ok? you seem so mellow for a change”.

The technique works, the technique is easy. I have meditated in the Indianapolis and Denver airports, I have meditated with my grand daughters running around my home and I have meditated in my car. ( the last one is not recommended while driving) The feeling I have afterwards is peaceful and energetic. If that makes any sense.

My anger and impatience have decreased tremendously and I’m only a month into this journey! Everyday gets better and better. Do yourself a favor and learn the technique, you won’t be sorry.

I have had amazing physical benefits since I started practicing Transcendental Meditation. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and for years, my sleep has not been very restful. Because of this, I use an app in addition to my Fitbit to track my sleep quality. Before learning TM, I was averaging about 60-70% sleep quality (sometimes less), but two days after learning TM, my sleep quality went up to 97% and has consistently been so much better! I wake up feeling rested for the first time in years, and I continue moving through my days feeling relaxed and happy. I am a single 55 year old. I took instruction in February this year (2018) and I can't BELIEVE the overwhelming and quick results of TM practice!! I started on a Monday and was done with instruction on Thursday. I am a single mom with a significant recent medical history along with chronic illness and pain. As such, I have been unable to work for four years and have reluctantly moved to Indianapolis to live with my daughter.

Before I decided to purchase the course for Transcendental Meditation, I felt skeptical. The price felt steep. Even though I'm a student, which made me eligible for a substantial discount, I wasn't sure whether to invest. After all, there are hundreds of options to learn meditation for free on YouTube. TM seemed a bit like big business. The benefits I've received in less than a week from continued practice have inspired me to write this review. Paul Wilson, who has been practicing TM for decades, is thoroughly knowledgable, and answered all of my questions expertly in simple, clear language during the free introductory phone call, in which he described the basics of TM, how it works, how it differs from other forms of meditation, the physiological and psychological benefits received from practice, etc. TM is the most rigorously studied and scientifically validated form of meditation that exists--the research is simply incredible. Your body-mind will thank you infinitely. After the very first meditation, I felt cleansed--blissful. And the effects have only compounded from continued practice: improved focus (infinitely better than caffeine! though even coffee tastes better); pervasive calm and presence of mind; lowered stress--every activity is imbued with a felt-sense of pleasure & ease. The money spent on the course feels like nothing compared to the value I've received personally, interpersonally, and professionally. We live in such demanding circumstances--with a constant underlying anxiety of how the conflicts we're facing as a culture continue to play out locally and globally--that the question arises: who must we become in order to meet the challenge of our time? I have less anxiety. Before I started TM, a particular problem for me had been anxiety while driving, which has decreased markedly since I began TM.

I have improved focus on tasks, whether they be routine or not. I feel more industrious, and I have extra drive to get things done.

As a conservative Christian, I've noticed that my prayer life has really improved, and I feel I have a closer relationship with God.

In general, I'm just enjoying life more now, and I consider learning TM as one of the best decisions I've made in my life. I only wish I had done it sooner!

Hi Paul, I hope that you are doing well. T.M. is amazing! I have had a complete and total relief of stress including tension headaches and overwhelming psychological stress. Several odd physical problems have stopped. I have not felt like myself in decades. I had forgotten what it felt like to feel good. It had been so long since I felt like myself.

T.M. was so worth the money that I spent. I wish that I knew to do this 30 years ago. My life would be so different. My mind is so clear and relaxed. There are no words that describe the relief and clarity of mind that I now possess. It is truly amazing. T.M. is the best thing that has ever happened to my mind. It is so simple, it should not work. It is too simple and ridiculous. Common sense says that it is ridiculous, it will not work! WOW!!!!! Does it work! Everyone should learn this when they are young. It is amazing! I love it. Of all of the things I have done in my life, T.M. is the most profound.

I have been practicing different types of meditation off and on for over 15 years. It wasn't until I learned the TM technique that I found a practice that I have not only stuck to but look forward to, every time. Directions to Our Suite

 

We’re located at 911 East 86th Street, Suite 108, Indianapolis, 46240, across from Nora Library.

In the Google Maps and Apple Maps apps, you can search for "Transcendental Meditation Indianapolis," and you will get directions right to our front door, on the east side of our building.

Pulling into the complex on the south side of 86th and Guilford, veer right and drive 3/4 of the way around the central building (Building 911) and come in the east entrance (to your left as you drive in from 86th Street). Please do not come in the first, west entrance you drive past. 

Please enter the east entrance of Building 911, and the Transcendental Meditation® Program office is the first door on the left, Suite 108.
